Jerry Gulka passed away on February 6, 2017. Funeral services were held on February 13, 2017, at St. Ann’s Roman Catholic Church with Father Paul Bringleson officiating.
Jerry was born in Flin Flon on December 6, 1971. He attended school in Flin Flon, graduating in 1990. He spent many hours at the Whitney Forum playing hockey. He played house league and on rep. teams. When he wasn’t at the rink he was out playing road hockey with his friends. In summer he played baseball. He also spent countless hours at Beaver Lake, Phantom Lake, Cliff Lake, or any of the many lakes throughout the area. While growing up in Flin Flon he made many friendships that he maintained to this day.
One of the funny stories he told us – and there were many - was he was over at his friend Darryl’s. They were leaving the house, and Darryl’s dad asked them where they were going. They replied “to throw rocks at the rink”, not elaborating they meant curling. Of course the boys thought that was pretty funny.
When he finished high school he and his friend Darryl headed west ending up in Quesnel, BC. He returned home and worked construction, but BC kept calling. He returned and worked construction in many places through the Okanagan Valley, Lower Mainland, and Vancouver Island. While on the island he worked on fishing boats and commercially dove for sea urchins. One of his experiences while on the boat was trying to revive a co-worker who had fallen overboard until help arrived. The fella didn’t survive, but Jerry was told he did everything possible to ensure his survival. As a result he had numerous boat skippers offering him a job.
While in BC he met Nicole Greentree. They moved back to Flin Flon where their son Brody was born. Three years later their second son, Riley, was born in Selkirk, MB. These boys were the light of his life. Being in Flin Flon didn’t allow him to see them as often as he would have liked. But they were always on his mind, and he talked about them constantly. He was very proud of them.
He worked from Ontario to BC and the Northwest Territories as a driller. Tired of the travel he worked various types of construction throughout Southern Manitoba and Northern Ontario, eventually making his way back to Flin Flon.
Eventually he went to work for Northern Bulk driving ore trucks until his passing.
Flin Flon also offered many fishing hot spots, which was his passion. He especially enjoyed being at the family cabin at Beaver Lake. He enjoyed everything he did and tried to do his best at everything he did.
Jerry would never hesitate to lend a helping hand to anyone who asked. He would always be the first to get to work to complete a project that had to be done.
Jerry touched many, many people throughout his life in such a positive way. He will be severely missed by his parents, brother Todd, and sons Brody and Riley, as well as Baba Olga and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. He was predeceased by his maternal grandparents and his paternal Gedo.
The family of Jerry would like to say thank you to the police and ambulance for their quick response; Dana, Darren, and Rhonda at Dadson Funeral Home for their compassion and professionalism; Father Paul Bringleson for his words of encouragement and touching service; and the Catholic ladies group for the delicious lunch served after the service.
Thank you to Brent and Kendall for being ushers and Jenni for attending the guest book.
